Moissanite was originally discovered in meteorites in 1893. As it is virtually non-existent in nature in jewelry quality, it is now produced to a high standard in laboratories. It impresses with its stronger sparkle and fire than diamonds. At the same time, moissanite is almost as hard as diamond and therefore perfectly suited for everyday wear.
Moissanite has a higher refractive index and greater dispersion (fire/rainbow) than diamonds. In addition, moissanite has double refraction – a property that diamonds do not possess. As a result, incoming light is uniquely split and transmitted within the stone. In combination with the higher dispersion, more intense light reflections, visible flashes of color, and a more lively sparkle are created. While diamonds are known for their classic, subdued sparkle, moissanite often exhibits a more dynamic and colorful rainbow play of light.
Moissanite is extremely durable and ideal for everyday wear. With a hardness of approximately 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is second only to diamonds (10) and is thus among the hardest gemstones in the world.
