Moissanite is known to be one of the hardest gemstones. On the Mohs hardness scale, with a hardness of about 9.25, it is just below diamond, making it one of the most resilient materials used in Moissanite jewelry. Many people choose a Moissanite ring precisely because it is particularly robust in everyday life and can be worn for many years.

But what can a Moissanite ring really withstand? How does the stone react to heavy loads, heat, or extreme tests that go far beyond what happens in normal daily life?

It is known that Moissanite can splinter in rare cases under very high stress. The crucial question, however, is under what conditions this actually happens and how resilient the stone really is in practice. That's why we wanted to know how much a Moissanite ring actually withstands and tried out some unusual hardness tests.

Moissanite vs. Angle Grinder – What happens when a mini angle grinder meets a Moissanite ring?

To see how durable Moissanite rings really are, we started with a simple but extreme test. For this, we used a small Dremel with a mini angle grinder and worked directly on a 3mm Moissanite Eternity Ring made of silver. In this test, we deliberately did not hit the metal of the ring, but the top of the set stones. So, grinding was done exactly where the Moissanite stones are located in the ring.

The result was surprisingly clear. While the small silver prongs holding the stones in the ring were slightly ground, the Moissanite stones themselves remained completely unharmed. Even after we repeatedly went directly over the surface of the stones, they showed no visible damage. Although the settings were slightly worn, they continued to hold the stones firmly in the ring.

This test clearly shows how hard Moissanite actually is. While the silver of the ring quickly shows marks, the stones themselves remain stable. This combination of a sparkling gemstone and high durability is one of the reasons why Moissanite is so often used today for rings that are worn daily.

The yellowish glow of Moissanite stones is not a coincidence, but a fascinating physical phenomenon. Moissanite consists of silicon carbide (SiC), a crystal with an extremely high melting point of over 2,700 °C. When the stone is strongly heated, the electrons in the crystal lattice begin to excite – they absorb energy and emit it as visible light. The resulting wavelength is in the yellow spectrum (approx. 570–590 nm), which explains the characteristic glow. After cooling, the electrons return to their original state – the stone shows no damage.

Moissanite vs. Fire – What happens under extreme heat?

In the next test, we wanted to know how a Moissanite ring reacts to intense heat. For this, we used the same 3mm Moissanite Eternity Ring again and heated it with a gas torch while slowly rotating the ring. The goal was to observe what happens to the stones and the silver when the ring is exposed to an open flame for an extended period.

After a short time, a visible change was evident. The Moissanite stones began to glow yellowish under the heat, while the silver of the ring heated up more and more. Due to the high temperature, the metal became softer and began to melt slightly. However, the flame was not strong enough to completely melt the silver, as it takes relatively long for the entire metal to reach the necessary temperature uniformly.

Despite the extreme heat, the Moissanite stones remained firmly in the ring. While the silver reacted much more strongly to the temperature, the stones themselves showed no structural damage. Such temperatures, of course, never occur in normal everyday life, but they very clearly show how heat-resistant Moissanite fundamentally is.

Under what circumstances can a Moissanite stone really break?

After such tests, the question naturally arises whether a Moissanite stone can break at all. Even though Moissanite is one of the hardest gemstones, it is – like any material – not completely indestructible.

It is important to understand, however, that a break does not just happen. In our tests, it has already been seen that even direct mechanical stress or intense heat does not automatically lead to damage to a Moissanite stone. In practice, it usually requires very targeted and strong force applied to a sensitive part of the stone.

Typically, this only happens if a ring strikes a hard, sharp edge with great force, or if a localized force acts precisely on a corner of the stone. Such situations are rare in everyday life and differ significantly from normal stresses like impacts, friction, or heat.

Precisely because of this, Moissanite stones are considered particularly robust. The combination of high hardness and stable structure ensures that they often remain amazingly resilient even under unusual stresses. A break is theoretically possible, but in practice, it requires significantly more force than many people initially assume.

In the test, you can clearly see in the videos how the Moissanite glows yellow under the heat, while the metal of the ring slowly gets hot. Even when we worked with the angle grinder, in the end, it was primarily the sterling silver that was damaged, while the Moissanite stones themselves remained surprisingly stable. These very properties are also the reason why Moissanite is considered a very durable gemstone in everyday life.
