Moissanite is not a diamond imitation but a unique gemstone in its own right, originally discovered in meteorites in 1893. Since it is virtually non-existent in nature in jewelry quality, it is now produced in laboratories to a high standard. It impresses with more brilliance and fire than a diamond. At the same time, moissanite is almost as hard as diamond, making it perfect for everyday wear.

With a Mohs hardness of 9.25, moissanite is almost as hard as a diamond, making it exceptionally scratch-resistant. Moissanite has a higher refractive index and stronger dispersion (fire/rainbow effect) than diamonds. Additionally, moissanite possesses double refraction – a property that diamonds do not have. This causes incoming light to be split and transmitted through the stone in a unique way. In combination with the higher dispersion, this creates more intense light reflections, visible flashes of color, and a more vivid sparkle. While diamonds are known for their classic, steady sparkle, moissanite often displays a more dynamic and colorful play of rainbow light.
No. Moissanite does not become cloudy on its own and does not lose its brilliance. The stone is not coated and retains its optical properties for years. Deposits such as soap residue or dirt can briefly diminish the sparkle, but they can be easily removed with simple cleaning.
Only at extremely high temperatures or through aggressive chemicals can moissanite be damaged or change its color – just like a diamond.

Then hold it firmly under water with your fingers and clean it carefully with the brush. Once everything is clean, rinse the jewelry with clear water and dry it carefully with a clean cloth. Paper towels are best, as they are highly absorbent and cleaner than a cloth used multiple times. It is best to always dry your jewelry instead of letting the water simply evaporate. A fine, soft makeup brush is important. A hard brush like a toothbrush should not be used.
Avoid moving the jewelry around in the bowl as much as possible, as silver or gold could get scratched against the bowl. Therefore, always hold the jewelry firmly with your hands while it is submerged.

Both moissanite and diamonds, even when freshly cleaned, can let slightly less light into the stone due to fingerprints and skin oils, as the fingerprints obstruct the light.
Therefore, it may be worth carefully wiping the gemstone briefly with a clean paper towel immediately after putting it on, without touching it with your fingers. The paper towel absorbs fingerprints and skin oils very well and is always clean. Because to get the maximum sparkle out of diamonds or moissanite, the cloth itself must not leave any oily residue behind.
For rings, this can be skipped entirely, as they often touch other fingers during daily wear. This trick is best for earrings, as earrings immediately get fingerprints on the gemstones when put on and are generally not touched during daily wear. For necklaces, it is similar to earrings.
The difference is not huge, and a gemstone does not automatically lose its sparkle with every touch. However, anyone with a keen eye will notice the difference immediately: a moissanite or diamond without fingerprints can further enhance that "wow" effect.
