Moissanite was originally discovered in meteorites in 1893. Since it is practically not found in nature in jewelry quality, it is now high-quality produced in the laboratory. It impresses with its stronger sparkle and fire than diamonds. At the same time, moissanite is almost as hard as diamond and therefore perfectly suited for everyday wear.
Moissanite has a higher refractive index and stronger dispersion (fire/rainbow) than diamonds. In addition, moissanite has double refraction – a property that diamonds do not possess. This causes incoming light to be split and transmitted in a special way within the stone. In combination with the higher dispersion, more intense light reflections, visible flashes of color, and a more lively sparkle are created. While diamonds are known for their classic, calm sparkle, moissanite often exhibits a more dynamic and colorful rainbow light play.
Moissanite is extremely robust and ideal for everyday use. With a hardness of approximately 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is second only to diamonds (10), making it one of the hardest gemstones in the world.
