Moissanite was originally discovered in 1893 in a meteorite. However, natural moissanite is one of the rarest gemstones ever and only occurs in microscopic crystals. Since these are naturally not suitable for jewelry, moissanite for jewelry is now grown under controlled laboratory conditions. This creates jewelry-quality gemstones with exceptional purity, high hardness, and a more intense sparkle than diamonds.

Explanation of the terms in the table

Hardness (Mohs Scale)
The Mohs scale shows the scratch resistance of a gemstone. A harder stone can scratch a softer stone, but not vice versa. Diamond (10) can scratch moissanite and zirconia, moissanite (9.25) can scratch zirconia, while zirconia (8-8.5) cannot scratch either.

Refractive Index
The refractive index describes how much light is deflected when it enters a material. A well-known example is a straw in water, which appears bent due to light refraction. The higher the refractive index, the more the straw is bent. In gemstones, a higher refractive index causes light to be guided more strongly inside and reflected by the facets – this creates more light reflections and more brilliance. The value is not a scale with fixed starting and ending values like the Mohs scale (1–10), but a measured value of the optical properties of a material.

Dispersion (Fire/Rainbow Effect)
Dispersion describes how strongly a gemstone splits incoming light into its individual colours. The value is again not a rating scale, but a measured value of the optical properties of a material. The higher the value, the more strongly the individual colours of the incoming light are separated and the more intense coloured flashes of light (fire/rainbow effect) can occur. Moissanite thus exhibits a particularly pronounced fire.

Double Refraction
Double refraction is a natural material property of a gemstone – either a stone has it or it does not. In double refraction, an incoming light ray is split into two inside the stone. Back to the example with the straw in water: If the water had double refraction, the straw would appear doubled. This creates additional optical effects and a special sparkle that makes moissanite even more special. Diamond and zirconia do not possess this property.
